Death System on Atia

Death Penalties

You have died.

When you wake up, you are on your back in the dirt. You feel sick, but cannot identify the source. After a while, you may get hungry or thirsty, most likely both. The collar is still around your neck, but if you stay here long enough, you will find that it is inactive…after all, you can't kill the dead. Look around you. All you can see is rocky terrain. But what's that, up ahead? It looks like a village. If you wander your way over there, you will find just that. But it is not the happy, paradisiacal sort of city that Atia is. It is dirty and barren. Those who wander the streets are just like you: sunken, hungry, thirsty, and most definitely lost. You may wander around this harsh environment for as long as you like, thirsty, hungry, and alone, but eventually you will need to barter with the ruler of this land, Thanatos, if you'd like to come back to life.

He will be found at the center of the city on a throne of stone and briars, a bastion of beauty in the desolate wasteland. Or as beautiful as a god of death can be. As he speaks to you, he informs you that he will need something in return for your life back. This is your chance to make an offer. If you're lucky, you will be allowed to give up something of your choosing, but if he is displeased with your offering, you will be sent back on his terms. If you do not have anything to keep him, he may keep you there for a while.

Upon reviving, you will be transported to the Temple of Thanatos, formerly known as the Forest Temple. You will be laid out upon a bed set up on a pedestal,, still dressed in whatever clothes you were wearing upon death, in a dark room, lit only by a few candles. If you're lucky, you'll get a room with a window and a glimpse of the foliage outside. Either way, you will remember your time in Purgatory as a desolate time. One of the priests or priestesses will attend to you if you are in need of it; however, they will make it clear that you are not welcome there and that you are expected to leave immediately. It's a far cry from the lavish greeting of Atia's palace, and hardly a warm welcome for someone who's just awoken from the dead.

What will you sacrifice for your life?

Death FAQ

Now, instead of simply waking up in Atia's palace like before, characters will have to actually barter with a God to get their life back. If their offer is not sufficient for Thanatos, you will be forced to either sit out or give up a memory. (see below)

Tier Memory to lose
1 vague or distant memories, like old, nearly forgotten friends, or pieces of your childhood
2 faces of insignificant people, but their names remain
3 a bigger piece of childhood, e.g., important memories, big events, and there is a blank spot in their place
4 the names of insignificant people are gone
5 finer details about homeworld are gone, e.g. foreign geography, culture, etc.
6 face of people familiar to you who are not currently in Atia start going fuzzy
7 start losing important details about homeworld; there's just a blank where that knowledge once was
8 the names of familiar people not currently in Atia start disappearing
9 familiar people not in Atia are lost, and memory of home is only vague
10 all you can remember is your time in Atia
Idea adapted off [livejournal.com profile] conscripted

If you don't want to lose a memory, then you will have to barter something of increasing value to your character.

If you, the player, cannot think of anything truly worth offering (either those memories don't really apply or you can't think os something to give up), your character will be forced to remain in Purgatory for the following lengths of time:

First strike: 1 day

Second strike: 3 days

Third strike: 7 days

Fourth strike: 2 weeks

Please use this option sparingly. It was not intended for an easy way out, but rather as an OOC fallback for players.

Anything beyond that and you will need to consult a mod. This has been done to make death a little more serious. While we understand that death is easy in this game, we could just make it permanent and that wouldn't be any fun, now would it? :( Please note that the third and fourth strike go up steeply.

What sort of things can be offered to Thanatos?

This is where it's up to you to get creative! It can be something like a precious trinket, an important weapon, or something a little less material. In a previous incarnation of a similar system, a character gave up their ability to stand in direct sunlight. You could give up things like sight, hearing, or heck, if you're brave enough, even a limb. It's up to you, but requires mod approval. When it comes to physical items, even if the character does not have it on them at the time of death, Thanatos will retrieve them.

Note that, for example, the first tier, it might be something like a small, unimportant piece of jewelry. By death five it might be something very important to them, like a gift received here in Atia. By nine and ten, it'll be something big.

If you would like to barter something like an action (i.e., Temari agrees to loosen ten collars in the next week in exchange for her life) please talk to a mod so that we can discuss what will happen. While we're not automatically saying no, this is one thing we'd like to talk about beforehand. :)

If my character dies, am I required to post here?

Yes. This is so we can keep track of who is dying and when.

Do I reply in character, or out of character?

Out of character. While it's always fun to do this in-character, in order to make life easier on everyone without having to deal with where to put this, how to lock it/screen it, etc., this will be done all OOCly.

What do I reply with?

Additionally, all comments are screened for the time being.

Do I have to wait for a mod to respond to me?

No, you do not. However, if we feel that your character isn't living up to their losses, then we will be in touch with you. That's the big reason we're taking down this information.

What happens if I choose to mix and match penalties?

Let's say, for example, that Yuri Lowell dies three times. The first time he gives up a memory. The second time, he gives up a small trinket. The third time, he chooses to give up a memory. The memory he loses would be the second tier memory. However, if he dies a fourth time and decides to give up an item, there would be a jump in the quality, so while there's no actual tiers for offerings, it would be equivalent to the fourth tier. To put it another way, if your character gives up all memories until their ninth death, then when they hit their next death and try to barter something, they will have to barter something big and significant.

How long do I have to sit out per death?

Each death, barring any other circumstances, requires one day of sit out. We're not going to police this very heavily, but they can't just come back instantly. However, we're not going to come kick you out of the game because you brought a character back after 23 hours.

This does not apply if you use the strike system; the strike system overrides this option.

Can my character stay longer?

Yes, actually. There are lots of reasons your character could stay in Purgatory longer, if you so choose. They could get lost trying to find their way to the city, or spend some time deliberating what they want to barter. We offer this option because we know that some of you like to be cruel to your characters. ;D

How long can my character stay?

Up to two full weeks, before there starts to be permanent damage, either physical or mental. For example, Naruto spent an extended vacation in Purgatory and returned with amnesia. While players are allowed to do so, you'll be asked to discuss the penalties with the mods.

If my character is dead, do I still have to make activity checks?

Yes! Unless, of course, you're on hiatus. All hiatuses must be filed like normal. However, please plan accordingly. The only other exception is if the mods have granted you prior permission for plot purposes; however, do not presume that we will give you a free pass on the activity check due to death.

Can my character use their network device in Purgatory?

No.

What will they be giving up?: First strike? He's likely to refuse to bargain and see what happens. I'm fine with handwaving this, but if there's a chance to thread with Thanatos I would be intrigued.

Also, he'll tell Death that Chloe says hi, and that Mokou's coming to talk to him soon. And if there's a penalty for being mouthy to Death, honestly, he probably incurs it.

Dying on the 29th, so coming back on the 30th? Or the 1st, with astrike time added?

What death is this for them?: 6th with normal penalty
What will they be giving up?: Chloe will be bartering a pocket-watch that plays a musical tune. The item was a gift to her from Atia in an event about a year and a half ago. It is one of a few critical items from her original world that ties into her memories of her love/obsession Kirika. The song it plays is a shared, ancient memory for them and was the song that played at the time of Kirika's first kill (A murder that tied all three girls together for the entire series). When it played the last time in Chloe's world, it snapped Kirika out of Altena's control, causing her to protect Mireille and thus kill Chloe.

It carries a certain unpleasant but important collection of memories attached to it, but Chloe would rather lose one of her last physical reminders of Kirika than lose the memory of her herself.
